How DMOS Helped My Mom After Her "I've Fallen And I Can't Get Up" Moment

It was 3 a.m. when my phone started making a sound I've never heard before. After fumbling around in the dark, I finally grabbed it and realized it was my Mom calling via Facebook messenger. I thought, "This can't be good", and it wasn't. Mom had fallen, she couldn't reach her phone, and Dad was blissfully asleep down the hall without his hearing aids in. The only thing Mom could reach to call for help was her Chromebook, and thank GOD she figured out how to call on Facebook. She'd tripped and fallen in the middle of the night, she was pretty sure her hip was broken, and I needed to call 911 for her.

After calling the Centerville police and EMS, and instructing them how to "break in" to my parents' home while Dad was asleep with a large dog also inside...Mom got to the hospital. Sure enough, she had badly fractured her hip and was going to be transported by ambulance to Des Moines for surgery. The first thing the hubby and I told her- "Mom, request a doctor from Des Moines Orthopedic Surgeons. They are the BEST". Mom did, and that's how she ended up in the amazing hands of Dr. Ian Lin, who's done more than a thousand hip replacements in his long career at DMOS.

It's obviously hard for Mom to be an active, spunky lady suddenly feeling frail and every minute of her almost 80 years. As Dr. Lin put it, Mom was "pretty sure she'd never walk again". BUT...Mom was wrong. Thanks to Dr. Lin and DMOS, she's back to her old self, good as new! It was great to catch up with Dr. Lin this morning on the KXNO Morning Rush, and reunite Mom and Dr. Lin on the phone. Sean also got a quick evaluation from Dr. Lin for his old baseball injury!

In a bit of irony, Dr. Lin came into the studio with his arm in a sling, and explained he'd dislocated his shoulder for the fifth time recently, and we joked about which DMOS surgeon did surgery on the surgeon. Dr. Lin is on the mend himself, and it was great to thank him again in person for taking care of Mom. DMOS...they really are the best!
